Solid, satisfying and memorable performance

Lennox herself, at 71, is an excellent blues guitarist, backed by an incredible female singer and a crack guitarist, among others. Her vocal stylings were all there, although not always strong in the upper register. The band performed a lot of hits that sounded close to studio, with some live edge and great solo work, but it was the non-hits that often stole the show. They did two generous encores, with some new (excellent) songs from her recent release, and incredible instrumental work by nearly all the musicians. Her backup singer performed Stevie Wonder's "Til You Come Back to Me," Ari and band covered a Donald Fagen cover, and several extended blues numbers brought the crowd to their feet. I'd never seen Ari Lennox but assumed she would be cool, professional, and musical -- and she and her band were, in spades. Lennox herself was soft-spoken, warm, and a super-smooth performer. Just excellent all around.
